Ian 'McT' McTavish
Wood, Sheet Metal & Watercolours
Ian was born in Pahiatua in the Wairarapa. His grandparents farmed in Pungaere outside of Kerikeri in the early 1900’s and spent their later life in Kerikeri. Ian’s father was born in Kawakawa Base hospital, so he has an affinity with Northland. Ian retired from the corporate sector in 2018, to become a full-time artist, musician and fisherman. If he’s not in his Herne Bay Auckland Studio, he is out fishing on the Hauraki Gulf fishing. “I love the blues and green clear waters of the outer Hauraki Gulf. A lot of my colour inspiration comes from these colours. In late 2021, I experienced nature at its very best. In excess of a 100 Gannets were diving on a big shoal of Anchovy. We were in the middle of it. The Anchovy decided to shelter under my boat. It was a truly an event of nature with the blue/green clear water alive with life’. Ian cuts and the shapes of his fish from cedar boards, hand cuts the head, fins and tail from sheet metal and uses Matisse and Montana watercolours. Once finished, the pieces are clear coated and photographed in high definition for printing. Originals are occasionally available as well as high quality framed and unframed prints.
